A SALE florist shop has been recognised for its contribution to Anglo-Canadian relations on the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Ken Fraser Florist was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Royal British Legion.

The shop had made 100 of the buttonholes worn in Newfoundland on Memorial Day - made up of Rosemary and Forget-Me-Nots - for a service held by the Northenden Branch of The Royal British Legion on July 1, to mark the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The Newfoundland Regiment suffered almost 100 per cent casualties on the Somme, and these buttonholes were very much appreciated by the Canadians in the congregation.

The presentation was made by Stephen Morrison, the secretary of the Northenden branch of the Royal British Legion, to Harry Shakespeare from Ken Fraser Florist. He handed over the certificate on Friday, November 18, the 100th anniversary of last day of the Battle of the Somme.
