THE school holidays can seem an impossible feat to fill – but this Sale teenager’s summer break has taken him all around the world.

Oli Mottram, 14, is asking Twitter users from every nation to send him a ‘wave’ as part of a unique school project.

He and fellow pupils at Cheadle Hulme School were tasked with coming up with a project to occupy them over the nine-week break and imaginative Oli came up with ‘A Wave from the World’.

“My school runs something called The Duncan Mattheson prize, which is an independent thinking project aimed at keeping our brains working over the summer,” said the Year 9 student.

“The point of my project is to show how social media has made the world a smaller place and in doing so I’m trying to get a wave from every country in the world using Twitter.”

And Oli’s project has been a roaring success. The tech-savvy teen tracked down active Twitter users in countries around the world and asked them to tweet a photo of them waving.

So far Oli has received waves from 80 countries, including Rwanda, Argentina, Afghanistan, China and Ecuador. Celebrities have also got on board, with TV presenter Jeff Brazier and actress Denise Welch sending friendly selfies.

“It’s a lot more difficult than I first imagined and has taken many, many hours so far,” said Oli.

“But the reaction from people has been brilliant. When people hear about it they are very supportive and want to send a wave. I’ve been really surprised at how nice people I’ve never met have been.”

The highlight for Oli was receiving a wave from Syrian refugee children in Turkey, which was facilitated by charity Humanity First. The charity also tweeted waves from children in Haiti and Guatamala and Oli has been inspired to raise money for its Classroom Transformation Project in low income countries.

But before he can embark on this charitable project, he needs get waves from the remaining 115 countries before summer is out. And he has enlisted the help of his family to achieve this goal.

Mum Fiona Keenaghan said: “When Oliver found a way to use social media in an educational way, he knew I wouldn’t object. The project is harder than we imagined and has taken over our summer.

"His little sister Ava has renamed our kitchen ‘A Wave from The World HQ’. We’re proud of Oliver though and just hope he can complete the project in time.”
