A SALE Brownie Leader who has dedicated more than 50 years service to the organisation has been recognised at the Inspiring Women Awards 2014.

Jean Sant, 66, of Oulton Avenue, received The Community Award last month for her exceptional will to improve the daily lives of a small group of people.

With a wealth of experience in various Brownie roles – District Commissioner, Pack Leader, Swimming Club Leader – Jean has tirelessly contributed to the running of local clubs.

She said: “I’m just so thrilled about it. It’s tremendous to be recognised.

“I was going to retire last year [and] I really don’t think I would still be doing it if there was not a need for me and I was not still getting something out of it. I am still giving something back to them.”

Jean, who was born in Sale and has a professional background in the food industry, says she has made many friends during her time with the Brownies.

She added: “Hopefully friendship, caring to think of others before themselves and learning to be aware of the community [are the lessons we have taught them].”

Jean also spoke about her own adventures, such as learning to abseil when she was 60.

She said: “I do not think it matters what age you are – as long as you are just prepared.”

‘Be prepared’ is the Scouts’ motto and Jean has certainly encompassed that slogan all her life.

She said: “I am still learning things at my age.”
