A NEW Partington girls' football team is on the ball - thanks to the Messenger.

The Messenger recently reported that Moss Lane Rovers had been launched by mum and daughter Di and Jo Finnegan, to bring football to girls in Partington, Carrington, Sale and surrounding areas.

The manager of the Woodsend Co-op Store, Helen Finn, saw the article - and decided to back the team through the Co-op's Community Support Initiative.

She donated 12 new footballs to the team. Some of Moss Lane Rovers' Open age, U16s and development players went to the Woodsend store to be presented with the footballs by Helen.

Helen, who herself played football while growing up, has promised to continue to support the club in the future.

Kerry Gray, from the club, said: "Thank you to the Messenger for helping us and getting great support from the community.

"We would like to thank Helen and Woodsend CoOperative store for this support and the continued support she is giving us."

The club provides football sessions to girls aged four upwards from all surrounding areas. The players train at Cross Lane Park, Moss Lane, Partington M31 4FA and there are open training sessions every Saturday for Girls aged 4 to 16.

The under-16s, who are Looking for a goalkeeper for the upcoming season, train on Tuesdays from 6.45 to 8.15pm, while the open age group trains on Wednesdays, 7 to 8.30pm.
