MESSENGER readers have given short shrift to a Labour councillor's explanation for switching allegiances and joining the Conservative group.

Cllr John Smith, who represents Bucklow St. Martin’s ward, joined the Tory group on Wednesday.

Cllr Smith who has represented Partington, Carrington and Sale West for nine years, said he'd made his decision because he “felt that Labour in Trafford were not representing the best interests of Trafford residents."

He continued: "I consider that they have drifted away from democratic principles and I simply cannot continue to support them."

But Messenger readers who responded to his switch were not impressed.

They included reader Divad1, who said: "Disgusted to find any voted-in candidate can change seats like they are playing musical chairs."

Rollockybill said he was 'disgusted' at the switch and called on Cllr Smith to resign and stand as a Conservative.

This was echoed by Watching, who said he was "voted in by the public as a Labour councillor, no way should he be allowed to jump ship."

Another reader, oleoleole, agreed: "The people of the Bucklow St. Martin’s ward voted in a Labour candidate and now have a Tory one and that is just wrong."

Announcing his decision, Cllr Smith said: "I do wish to continue to strive for the best opportunities for my ward and feel that the best way to do this is by joining the Conservative group."

Labour group leader, Cllr Andrew Western, said: "Cllr Smith resigned from the Labour group last week after being advised that he was subject to disciplinary proceedings with regard to his conduct and performance as a Labour group member."
