A SALE man who has battled back from a life threatening kidney condition is holding a charity night to thank the hospital that treated him.

Mike Donovan is hosting a Northern Soul night at 7pm on October 7 at the Mercure Altrincham Bowdon Hotel, Bowdon.

The fundraiser comes a month after he joined 35 other cyclists to complete the 4 Countries Cycle Challenge.

They cycled 325 miles over four days from Dover to Amsterdam. Their efforts raised an impressive £70,000 for Kidneys for Life, a charity that was set up in 1976 for the benefit of renal patients at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), where Mike was treated.

Now the father-of-four is looking to boost the charity's coffers further with the Northern Soul night.

Mike, aged 58, fell ill last year with flu like symptoms that would not go away. He had previously always been fit.

He was admitted to the MRI where he was diagnosed with the kidney condition Vasculitis PR3.

He said it was devastating to be told he had a life threatening illness.

"It was a life changing experience and if it wasn't for the doctors and the amazing nursing staff on Ward 36, I wouldn't have dealt with it as well as I have," he said.

"The MRI renal unit is an incredible facility."

Mike, who has his own telecoms business, ended up having treatments during the whole of September last year, including nine blood transfusions and eight plasma exchanges.

On the day he was discharged he met Sarah May from Kidneys for Life and pledged to help the charity.

Anyone wanting to support the event and help raise funds can donate and obtain tickets at kflnorthernsoul.eventbrite.co.uk (minimum donation £35 per person).
