THERE has been a church on the site of St Mary's, Bowdon, for more than a thousand years and choral evensong has been sung in the church for at least 400 of these.

On Sunday, June 12 the Bowdon Church Choir will perform a very special choral evensong to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

This multi talented choir now boasts a string of accolades, which range from members of the choir being invited to sing for a week at both Canterbury Cathedral and Bury St Edmunds Cathedral to the junior members performing for the CBeebies radio programme on BBC Music Day.

The choir is led by director of music Michael Dow, who said: “ We are delighted to be holding a special choral evensong to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

"The service will feature a number of choral favorites such as Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Parry’s I Was Glad, both composed for coronation services.

"The choir members range in age from and 8 years to 71 years and consistently sing to an outstanding standard.”

The Queen’s 90th Birthday service will be held on Sunday, June 12 at 6.30pm, led by Canon John Sutton. This event comes just prior to the installation of the new vicar, the Rev Ian Rumsey on June 21, which will also prominently feature well-known choral music.
