CAMRA guide listing for the Old Market Tavern and Costello’s in Altrincham
12:00pm Friday 5th October 2012 in Altrincham
TWO of Altrincham’s real ale pubs have been selected to appear in the 40th edition of the prestigious Campaign for Real Ale’s Beer Guide 2013.
The pubs are the Old Market Tavern, in Old Market Place, and Costello’s, in Goose Green.
And the landlord of the Tavern, John Glover, and the owner of Costello’s, John Costello, are thrilled for their customers, staff – and themselves.
It’s the fifth consecutive year the Tavern has been chosen for CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide but it’s the first time for Costello’s, which only opened in December 2010.
John Glover said: “I normally have 11 different ales in stock and also one real draft cider.
“It’s an honour to appear in the guide, particularly as it’s the 40th anniversary.”
He added: “My customers have very discerning tastes so that’s why my staff and I ensure our real ales are always on tip-top form.”
For Costello’s it is the third accolade this year after winning CAMRA’s Pub of the Year for Trafford and Hulme.
And brewery expert John also won a gold medal at London’s Great Beer Festival for his creation – Chocolate Cherry Mild.
“To be selected for the Good Beer Guide within 18 months of opening is a tribute to my staff and myself,” said John.
“My customers enjoy a good pint of real ale and we make sure they get one.”
Roger Protz, editor of The Good Beer Guide, wrote a congratulatory letter to both Johns.
He said: “Out of over 50,000 pubs in Britain, only 4,500 of the finest outlets for real ale are chosen for this year’s guide.
“It’s a remarkable achievement for your pub and speaks volumes for the quality of beer that local CAMRA members have selected you for inclusion.”
