Transport for Greater Manchester demolishes footbridge ahead of Altrincham Interchange redevelopment

The shape of things to come - how the Interchange will look The shape of things to come - how the Interchange will look

THIS is how Altrincham Interchange will look in 2014, after completion of a £19m revamp.

The first phase of work to prepare for the station's redevelopment has been completed.

The disused footbridge over Stamford New Road, which connected the Stamford Quarter to the current interchange, paving the way for the transformation of the site.

Transport bosses say the improvements will transform the existing interchange into a new, fully accessible facility with a modern concourse, a single, integrated ticket office, and improved links between bus, train and tram services.

Transport for Greater Manchester is in the final stages of appointing a contractor to deliver the project as a whole, but the footbridge had to be demolished now to enable the wider redevelopment to start later this year.

£19 million?! I'm pleased its being redeveloped, but for that I'd want the entire train and bus station rebuilt. The photo makes it look like the grubby brick train station is remaining.
