A SCREENING clinic to prevent sudden deaths from heart disease in young people is coming to Altrincham.

The details of the cardiac screening session in Altrincham were revealed just a day before Bolton Wanderers star Fabrice Muamba collapsed with a heart attack during an FA Cup tie on Saturday. He was in a critical condition in hospital as Messenger went to press.

The clinic will carry out checks to show up undetected heart defects.

Young people between the ages of 14 and 35 are being urged to go along and get screened - particularly if they play sport.

The Altrincham session - which will be held on July 1 - is being organised by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and the Ben Crean Trust.

The trust was founded after Altrincham resident Ben Crean, 28, died of a massive heart attack in October 2008.

Ben’s mother, Jennie, of Massey Road, Altrincham, said: “What happened to Fabrice is exactly what happened to my son - he also collapsed and was revived. It is eerily the same.

“Fabrice had heart screening but to check some of the conditions you have to have specialist heart screening.”

Jennie, assistant head teacher at Blessed Thomas Holford School in Altrincham, added: “We want to raise awareness that all young people need to go for an ECG.”

The trust was set up by Ben’s former employers, property development company CTP Ltd, and his family - parents Jennie and Nick, and sister Amy, 28 - who have set out to ensure other young people are aware of potentially fatal heart conditions.

Twelve healthy young people die in the UK each week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions - but a simple and quick electrocardiogram (ECG) test could save their lives.

Dr Steven Cox, CRY’s director of screening, said: “It is essential that anyone with a condition knows about it. If they continue to participate in sport or take particular medication for example they could be putting their lives at risk. They may not show any symptoms or warning signs.”
