AN ALTRINCHAM sports store manager and cancer survivor received a hero’s welcome as he rowed in Liverpool’s Albert Dock, after canoeing five marathons in five days to raise funds for Stand Up To Cancer.

David Sing, 30, Sports Direct manager in Altrincham, was joined by members of Liverpool Canoe Club for the final leg as well as Love Island stars Jess and Dom and Hollyoaks stars Alice Barlow and Kelly-Marie Stewart.

It follows a week-long challenge where David and three other paddlers affected by cancer - Helen Weller, Carla Bradbury and Jag Chatha - have rowed a marathon a day from Chester to Liverpool along canals in the North West.

Different celebrities including TV’s Judge Rinder, Outnumbered actor Tyger Drew Honey, TV presenter Jake Humphrey, Towie star Chris Clark, have joined David and his team each day to help them row 120 miles.

On September 27 they travelled through Trafford via Sale Waterside with Celebrity Big Brother hunk and Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson, former Coronation Street and Emmerdale star Hayley Tamaddon, Gogglebox star Nikki Tapper and TV personality Michelle Heaton where supporters, including Coronation Street’s Jane Danson, turned out to cheer them on. They also stopped for lunch at the King’s Ransom.

Testicular cancer survivor David, who took part in the challenge to mark his fifth year cancer free, said it was emotional to finally finish the challenge and be met by crowds who lined the dock outside the Tate including David’s girlfriend Chloe Sweeney, 24, from Dovecot, Liverpool.

David said: “It’s been amazing but also very tough. I think I’m retiring from canoeing now!”

He added: “Having cancer has really changed my approach to life. I am coming up to five years of clear scans and I wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for research and fundraising.

“That’s why I wanted to support the Stand Up To Cancer Canoe Challenge.”

Stand Up To Cancer, a partnership between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, aims to speed up the translation of incredible scientific discoveries into innovative cancer medicine, tests and treatment.
