CIVIC dignitaries and representatives from Courts Leets and Guilds nationwide will attend a service and dinner to mark the formation of a Guild of the Freemen of Altrincham on Saturday, July 22.

The events will recognise the charter granted in 1290 that made Altrincham a market town, and that of 1937 when it became a municipal borough.

The original Leet’s officers had criminal jurisdiction and ensured peace. They monitored standards in food, drink and agriculture.

The service, conducted by the Rev Jerry Sutton, will take place at St Margaret’s Church, Dunham Road, Altrincham at 3 pm.

At it, Freemen of Altrincham will renew their vows of freedom and allegiance to the town of Altrincham and its environs and to the Queen.

A highlight of the dinner at the Cresta Court Hotel will be the unveiling of the Greater Altrincham Pudding designed in a competition by students.

The winners, judged by the chef at the Cresta Court were sisters Roisin, Grainne and Niamh Delaney aged 18, 16 and 14 who attend Trafford College and Loreto Grammar School, Altrincham, respectively.

Roisin said: “We are keeping the details secret but if you dwell on the strawberry element, you can convince yourself it is healthy!”

Members of the public may see an ale and wine tasting conducted by the Court’s Ale and Wine Tasters on Friday, July 21 from 6.15 – 8, starting at the Conservative Club, Greenwood Street, Altrincham.

Meeting on Altrincham Town Hall steps between 10 and 11am on Saturday, Alderman David Eastwood will conduct A Glimpse of Altrincham, a walk and history talk.

He will repeat it between 9.30 and 10.30 on Sunday, July 23.

This will be followed by another service, between 11.30 and 12.30 at Altrincham Unitarian Chapel.
