PUPILS at Altrincham's North Cestrian School are promoting unity and solidarity in the wake of the Manchester Arena attack and other acts of violence that have affected people both locally and nationally.

Pupils have organised a 'Pilgrimage for Peace' to churches, synagogues and mosques in Altrincham.

Deputy headmaster, Matthew Bell, said “Our students have a culture of respect and openness towards all beliefs and backgrounds. They are concerned that our communities are at risk of division after the recent attacks.

"We all love Manchester and there is genuine pride in promoting British values of tolerance and freedom.

"Altrincham can be a beacon of celebrating an amazing culture of respect and cohesion. Our pupils wanted to publicly share solidarity and peace, as people of faith and of no faith in Altrincham; shoulder to shoulder.

"What better way than a pilgrimage of peace; visiting and learning about our shared places of worship.”

North Cestrian School has always maintained strong ties with the community and faith leaders and has planned the pilgrimage in conjunction with St Margaret’s Church, South Manchester Synagogue and Altrincham and Hale Muslim Association on the afternoon of July 17.

“Our pupils represent many cultures and many faith groups as well as those of no faith. We are richer because of this and the pilgrimage is a way to honour our shared values and shared humanity. I am so proud of the way in which the pupils have led the community.” added Mr Bell.

One of the pupils organising the pilgrimage, Max Lee, said, “We are all friendly at this school regardless of background and faith. This pilgrimage will see a team representing many cultures and faiths coming together. We are really excited.'

The food and filming of the event is sponsored by Vision for Education and all are welcome to join the pilgrimage.

The Pilgrimage for Peace will start at 1pm on July 17 and finish at St. Margaret’s Church at 3pm.
