AN ALTRINCHAM teacher nicknamed ‘Speedy Lee’ by his students has come fourth in the Cheshire Triathlon.

Lee Suthard, 43, who teaches at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys competed in the Cheshire Triathlon coming first in his age group and with the fastest overall bike trial.

He completed the event, in Nantwich, in a very respectable one hour and five seconds, beating many younger competitors.

Lee, from Davenham, said: “My overall time was 1 hour and 5 seconds with the winner Tom Williams doing it in 59.05 so lessons learnt on the transitions there.

”But I am over the moon. My first triathlon in 15 years and I have won my age group and 4th overall, brilliant.

“The support from my daughters Elsie and Maya was amazing and my wife Beata has been phenomenal.”

Many of those who competed in the race represented Great Britain, highlighting the achievement of Lee who finished a mere minute behind first place and only 52 seconds behind a competitor 20 years his junior.

With his full time job as a teacher, most of his training is commuting to and from work and some late night swims and runs, with his family supporting him massively as best they can with the training.

The next north west triathlon will again be taking part in Cheshire on Sunday, August 13 2017, which the organiser hopes Lee will race in again with the hopes of trying to win.

In the past, Lee has won the world masters track pursuit championship in October 2014 whilst also gaining a bronze medal in the event a year later in 2015.

The triathlon consists of a 500m swim, 20k cycle and a 5k run, with the swim being held in an outdoor pool.
