LORETO Grammar School's staff and student quiz was far from pointless, with the £105 raised helping to fund a visit from inspirational Holocaust survivor Stephen Breuer in the spring.

Conceived by Vicky Roddis, Ava Jude and Rebecca McCann, who are sixth formers at the leading Altrincham Catholic grammar school, the event the event teamed up nine teachers with with nine sixth formers, for two qualification rounds of Pointless followed by a final based on questions from The Chase.

Among many topics the pairs had to answer on Roald Dahl novels and songs from Grease before the final which was eventually won by head of sixth form Helen Jordan and cover teacher Trudi Thwaite teamed with sixth formers Rebecca Parker and Lois Kelly.

Winner Ms Jordan said: “It's always great fun when staff and students work together for a truly worthwhile cause.”

Vicky Roddis, 17, said: “We all very much wanted to make a contribution to the Holocaust Memorial Trust Fund and are looking forward to Professor Breuer's lecture.

"Though our fundraising idea may seem to be not necessarily in keeping with the tone of the forthcoming event we feel it is important for the generations that follow to be joyful and have fun.”

The most popular Roald Dahl novel was 'The Big Friendly Giant' with the pointless answers including 'The Gremlins' and the 'The Vicar of Nibbleswicke', while the most popular song from Grease was 'You're the One That I Want' with pointless answers including 'Rock n' Roll is Here to Stay', 'La Bamba', and 'A Whole Lot of Shaking Going On'.
