VOLUNTEERS braved the cold and rain on Sunday to collect litter from around Altrincham neighbourhoods the first “Our Altrincham” litter pick of the year.

Each volunteer averaged 11,000 steps on their litter picking route, which totalled 253,000 steps around Altrincham.

An impressive 74 bags of litter were collected by the 23 volunteers on Sunday January 22.

Sarah Walmsley, of Our Altrincham, said: “This is the first of our planned litter picks for 2017 and the response from volunteers has been amazing. 74 bags of litter is an incredible amount of litter to be removed from the streets of Altrincham, with the added benefit of improving the health and wellbeing of our wonderful volunteers.”

Sarah added: “Considering the miserable weather, volunteers of all ages and abilities decided to give up their free time to make a real positive impact in Altrincham.

"It was also humbling that members of the public were stopping our volunteers and passing on their thanks and praise for their work in the community.”

The next litter pick is planned for Sunday March 19. If you would like to join in, email sarahw@ouraltrincham.org.
