AN Altrincham street is set to be transformed after a proposal for ten new homes got the go ahead from planning chiefs.

Four three bedroom townhouses and six two bedroom apartments are set to be erected at 16-24 The Downs as part of a development overhaul of the town-centre street.

Altrincham-based company Consensus has put forward the proposal and Tsiantar Architects, based in Springfield Road, are behind the design.

The existing storage building at the rear of 16 The Downs will be demolished, along with 18a, to make way for the development.

The application site sits in the Downs Conservation Area and borders the Stamford New Road Conservation Area.

Plans, which include a 32-space basement car park, went before Trafford Council’s planning committee on Thursday June 9.

Brian Mason, from agent Planning Conditions Ltd, spoke in favour of the application.

He told committee members that the development would help mitigate housing shortfall.

“It is an efficient use of land whilst respecting and enhancing the heritage aspect,” he added.

Vice chairman Cllr Daniel Bunting said he was very pleased with the proposal.

“I think it is an excellent application,” he added. “It seeks to provide high quality accommodation whilst seeking to preserve and enhance the conservation area in which it sits.

“I’m very happy with it and look forward to it being completed. It will make a positive contribution to the area.”

Cllr David Hopps echoed this sentiment.

“I’m really pleased to see a bricks and mortar development instead of a ‘flatpack’ apartment block that you see so regularly,” he said.

There had been some concern that cars which currently park at the back of the site would be displaced, causing traffic issues, but a highways officer pointed out that there will be suitable parking provision for both residents and tenants of the commercial units.

Members also highlighted the importance of ‘delicate demolition’ and harmony with neighbours.

“I hope the residents of Osborne Place are happy and satisfied with the development,” said Cllr Bernard Sharp.

“Generally though I am quite excited to develop what is scrubland at the rear.”

Cllr Philip Gratrix said when he first read the report, he couldn’t believe there was enough room for such a substantial development.

“I am amazed at what they are managing to squeeze in,” he said. “I was really impressed.”

Chair Cllr Vivienne Ward agreed with Cllr Gratrix in that the site is much bigger than anticipated.

“I am very excited about this project,” she added. “The development is sympathetic to the area and is exceptional in my opinion. Just look at what has taken place already. I have every confidence the development will be spot on.”

Cllr Bunting moved to approve, which was seconded by Cllr Gratrix, and committee unanimously voted in favour to grant.
