THE B &Q store in Broadheath is to close in September.

The bodyblow comes three years after the under-threat Atlantic Street store was given a reprieve.

Company bosses would not say this week how many jobs would be lost as a result of the closure.

But at the time of the closure threat in 2013, 70 jobs were set to be axed.

A B & Q spokesperson told Messenger this week: “We can confirm that staff at B&Q Altrincham have been told their store is set to close in September.

“We will endeavour to find alternative positions for as many staff as possible.”

The Broadheath outlet is one of 60 B & Q stores that its cash-strapped parent company Kingfisher is to shut in the UK and Ireland over the next two years.

The Broadheath shop was earmarked for closure in 2013 but it remained open after a plan to knock it down and build a Morrisons supermarket on the site was rejected by Trafford's planning committee.

A scheme for an Asda store in Broadheath was considered at the same time as the Morrisons application for the B & Q Broadheath site.

The Asda plan was also initially rejected. It was then approved at a meeting two weeks later.

This meeting was held after solicitors acting on behalf of the Asda application threatened to apply for a judicial review of the decision.

The Asda store opened last year.
