FRIENDS of Navigation Recreation Ground's annual Big Lunch on June 12 will see award winning Altrincham inventor

Ian Lilley unveil his first 'Superbin' in the North West at the his local park.

Developed in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, the innovative Superbin combines a large capacity bin with a

store for litter picking tools and cleaning equipment, so that park users can help keep their favourite green spaces tidy.

Protected by combination lock, park users can register to access the store.

And Ian isn't resting on his laurels - his newest invention Superbin Mark II, featuring a defibrillator and designed to be placed by sports pitches, was awarded second place in the Ideas Britain competition held at Manchester City Football Club on May 25.

Chairman of Friends of Navigation Recreation Ground in Broadheath, Michael Welton, said: “The Superbin empowers

local residents to take responsibility for the park they enjoy, rather than suffering in silence or relying on the

council to act when litter becomes a problem.

"We thought it was a fantastic idea when Ian raised it at our first-ever Friends meeting in 2014, but none of us really thought it would see the light of day. It is huge credit to Ian’s ingenuity and perseverance and the support of Keep Britain Tidy that it has become a reality, and we were determined to have the first one in the region.”

The bin is being installed as part of a £2,400 grant won by Friends of Navigation Recreation Ground at the public vote for the awarding of the 2015 Trafford Council Voluntary Sector Grants, with the money going towards the purchase of new benches and bins for the park.

The Big Lunch is an Eden Project scheme to get neighbours and communities eating and meeting together on an annual date in June.

Friends of Navigation Rec’s first Big Lunch in 2015 saw more than100 people picnic together in the park, the largest communal event in the park in recent memory. This year’s Big Lunch event will add a cycle repair workshop, a litter picking challenge, food bank donation collection point, live music and refreshments served at the Navigation Recreation Ground Bowling Green pavilion.
