TRAFFIC chaos ensued in Broadheath when a woman threatened to jump off a bridge on Tuesday evening.

Police negotiators were sent to the disused railway bridge over the A56, Manchester Road, at around 4.30pm to try and talk her down.

The negotiators (pictured) can be seen sitting calmly on the ground, while bystanders look on from below.

The woman, who is thought to be in her twenties, came down from the bridge at around 5.45pm and she was taken to hospital for a psychiatric assessment.

The road was closed in both directions between 4.30pm and 6pm, causing heavy congestion during the evening rush hour.

Witness at the scene, Valentina Almeida, told Messenger: “Cars are built up all the way down the road, passed the park. It’s absolutely manic.”

Another reader, who drove past the incident at around 5.10pm, said the police had established a diversion and were managing traffic well.
