AN Altrincham primary school celebrated its two-wheel success with a special bicycle-themed day and prize-giving last week.

Altrincham Church of England Primary School won a national prize draw as part of Sustrans’ ‘the big pedal’, in which schools compete to have the most journeys by bike.

On June 12, pupils were presented with five new bicycles from Isla Bikes and were also able to try out their bicycle skills with ‘Dr Bike’ sessions and sampled smoothies from a machine powered by a bicycle.

Sustrans work in schools throughout Greater Manchester to inspire more children to cycle or scoot to school.

Its work was prompted by research which shows only four per cent of children commute to school by bike or scooter, although nearly half of all children want to use two wheels for transport.

Jim Inglis, headteacher at Altrincham Church of England Primary School, said: “The participation in the big pedal event has shown how much the children love to cycle or scoot to and from school.

“The project has contributed to the healthier lifestyle initiative across the school and the enthusiasm to join in has been great.”
