A WOMAN who found a keepsake box full of locks of hair on the side of the road is hoping to reunite it with its rightful owner.

Sharon Snape came across a box full of ‘hair-looms’ on Ashley Road, in Altrincham, in February, while she was walking to Bowdon Prep School early in the morning.

The box, which Sharon believes could have been discarded after being stolen during a burglary, contains several vintage matchboxes with locks of dark brown and dark blonde hair inside.

The boxes – Puck Matches – date from the mid-19th century.

A larger box contained a full plait of long blonde hair.

The keepsake box was branded and once contained products by Helena Rubinstein, a cosmetics company which dates back to the early 19th century. The box is believed to have been produced in the 60s or 70s.

Considering the age and nature of the items, Sharon is keen to reunite the box with its owner.

Sharon shared photos of the box and its contents on Facebook but her search has been unsuccessful thus far.

She said: “When I found the box, the lid had been thrown off and I looked inside and saw locks of hair.

“I posted the photos on Facebook but had no luck.

“The locks of hair would appear to belong to an old person. It had got to be sentimental to someone.

“Maybe it is hair belonging to the family or even dead people.”
