RESIDENTS across north Trafford were at their wits’ end after a weekend of lost sleep and headaches from a mystery rumbling noise.

People from Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme were left scratching their heads after a deep humming sound blanketed the borough from Saturday night until Monday morning – with reports it was heard as far away as Knutsford.

Hundreds of people took to social media to try and figure out the source of the loud din, with some saying the unidentified, incessant noise, which was accompanied by vibrations, was driving them ‘crazy’ and giving them sleepless nights.

Suggestions as to what it could be included ongoing motorway works on the M60, tests at Carrington Power Station, stranded trains or even fracking.

But after some digging, it was found to be emanating from the Davyhulme Sewage Works.

United Utilities confirmed that the noise disturbance was caused by a faulty exhaust on a piece of equipment at the Davyhulme site, which is the biggest wastewater treatment works in North West England.

Davyhulme Sewage Works drains the entire western side of Manchester, from Chadderton in the north to Bramhall in the south, and is in operation 24/7.

A spokesperson from United Utilities said: "Our apologies to any residents who were kept awake by rumbling noises from our Davyhulme site over the weekend.

"The noise was caused by a faulty exhaust on a piece of equipment which is used to convert biogas into electricity. We've replaced the exhaust, and there should be no further issues.

"Once again, we're really sorry for any disturbance."

United Utilities said that resident should not experience any more noise issues. If you do, contact United Utilities 0345 672 3723.
