A NEW walking group for people living with dementia, their families, friends and carers will begin on October 26 in Stretford.

The walks are being run by City of Trees and Alzheimer’s Society and involve new fortnightly walking sessions at Longford Park for anyone who is living with dementia, as well as their friends, family and carers.

Janie Burrage, from 'green' group City of Trees, said: “Walking in a group outdoors is a great way to encourage physical exercise and touch base with nature. Longford Park offers great and accessible walking routes, suitable for all abilities.

“These walks also give people living with dementia and their carers a chance to meet other people, and take part in a fun activity together.”

According to Alzheimer’s Society, a number of studies show that in the short term regular exercise can result in improvements in memory and attention span.

Jane Rennie, a dementia support worker from the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Exercising is beneficial for everyone and for people with dementia it is particularly helpful.

“Walking is one of the best exercises because it improves circulation, helps prevent stiffness, aids relaxation, promotes a sense of calm and helps ensure a good night’s sleep. "Most importantly it reduces anxiety, stress and depression. It’s just so good for you.

“Walking in a group is even better because it provides an opportunity to meet and chat with others in a similar situation.” As part of the fortnightly sessions, the walkers will also enjoy a hot drink and a chat, discussing any issues or concerns they may have, key to helping tackle social isolation.

The Longford Park ‘Walk and talk’ sessions take place on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 2pm from Firswood Community Centre, Great Stone Road.
