A TIMPERLEY eyesore blighted by vandalism and arson attacks is finally being ripped down to make way for a new 62-home development.

Trafford Housing Trust and Wates Living Space Homes have started work on the redevelopment of the abandoned Bayer industrial complex, off Manchester Road.

The derelict building is being demolished and 33 family homes and 29 apartments are set to take its place on the 1.4-hectare plot.

Once phase one is completed in summer next year the scheme, which will be marketed under the Laurus Homes brand, will be named Stonebrook.

Larry Gold, director of Laurus Homes, said: “The Bayer building has for many years been a blot on the Trafford landscape and gives a bad impression of the area. Getting started on our plans for Stonebrook means that we can begin to create a modern, accessible and desirable residential scheme which will elevate the whole neighbourhood, providing much needed new housing and apartments in the process.”

Stonebrook is Trafford Housing Trust’s second major ‘eyesore’ regeneration project on the A56. Last year they began the transformation of the decrepit Waggon & Horses pub site in Sale into a mixed-use residential and retail scheme, which is due for completion later this year.

The Stonebrook development will be create a number of new jobs and apprenticeships but how many is yet to be announced.

There will also a ‘Building Futures’ programme, which offers jobseekers the chance to gain some basic construction skills, and a procurement strategy to encourage businesses and social enterprises in the area to bid for work linked to the development.

Trafford councillor Stephen Anstee, whose Broadheath ward includes the Bayer site, said: “I am delighted to see the excellent plans for this site now coming to fruition. The building has been an eyesore for far too long and a magnet for vandalism and anti-social behaviour. The new homes will be a fantastic addition to the area and will also help bring more investment into this part of Altrincham.”
