AN 11-year-old Timperley schoolgirl is embarking on a mammoth 180-mile walk from Wembley to Old Trafford – blindfolded.

Alicia Wright will be pulling on her walking boots for the epic task on Friday May 27 and is hoping to make to the Old Trafford stadium 10 days later on Monday June 10.

Money raised through the sponsored walk will be donated to Old Trafford-based charity Henshaws, which supports children living with sight loss to builds skills, develop confidence and look forward to a bright future.

The Forest Preparatory School pupil was inspired to raise money for the charity as she has first-hand experience of the kind of help they offer.

Following a routine sight test when she was five years old, it was discovered that Alicia had limited vision in one eye.

Last year, she completed a walk in aid of Henshaws from Blackpool to Trafford wearing a blindfold, totalling 60 miles over just three days – but this year she has taken it to a new level.

Lisa Wright, Alicia’s mum, is a legal executive based in Old Trafford.

She said: “My daughter has always been a very caring, conscientious person who is passionate about helping others and so we weren’t at all surprised when she told us that she wanted to help raise money for charity.

“It was Alicia who came up with the fundraising idea. I don’t think any of us realised just how tough it would be last time but it’s amazing the motivation that you generate when you know it’s for a great cause.”

Alicia, who aims to walk 20 miles a day, has set a fundraising target of £5,000. She will be accompanied on the walk by her parents – with mum Lisa leading her and dad Phil following behind them in the car.

Their trek will begin at Wembley stadium and will take them through Bedfordshire, Towcester, Rugby, Staffordshire, Cheadle and Macclesfield and finally, Old Trafford.
