Reward to help catch armed building society raiders

A £5,000 reward has been offered after a robbery at a building society in Sale.

At about 11.10am on Friday 7 March, three men wearing balaclavas and armed with an axe, metal grid and hammer went into the Leeds Building Society on School Road demanding cash.

The men then drove off with a fourth man in a silver Saab, registration number GK02 NYL,along Claremont Road in the direction of Ashfield Road.

Police have said that no-one was injured but members of the public and staff inside at the time were left distressed by the ordeal.

This included a seven-year-old boy and his mother who were confronted by one of the thieves.

Leeds Building Society has offered the cash reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the offenders.

Detective Constable Mark Astbury, of Stretford CID, said: "We have released this CCTV footage because we are continuing to ask for the public's help in tracing these offenders.

"At one point, the young boy and his mum were sat on a chair and one of the thieves physically took it off them and used it to keep the door open. The mum and her child were obviously very frightened.

"Although the thieves did not use their weapons, the threat of violence was there and it was a very traumatic ordeal for everyone inside the building society.

"Inquiries are ongoing to trace these offenders, and I particularly want to hear from anyone who may have seen the silver Saab being driven in the area at about the time of the incident.

"I would ask anyone who has information about this incident to come forward."

Anyone with information should call Stretford CID on 0161 856 7671 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
