OUTSTANDING public sector service has seen Trafford cemeteries worker Lance Francis rewarded with a prestigious Jubilee Award.

He received his award from The Baroness Massey of Darwen, in the House of Lords on July 30.

The Jubilee Awards are led by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues at the University of Birmingham and celebrate outstanding public sector service.

Nominating Lance, manager John Stevens, highlighted his polite and respectful manner towards the public, especially grieving families.

Telephone calls asking him to prepare a grave by hand, at whatever time, to ensure that the traditions of various religions can be met, including where possible burial on the day someone has died are always answered.

Lance’s efforts do not go unnoticed with many families taking the time to telephone to let managers know just how much Lance had helped them.

Just one example of the care Lance takes is that he can take up to three hours to prepare a burial plot from start to finish, to ensure mourners never stand at the graveside and see any bare soil.

He said: “This is the last thing that anyone will have done for them. You’re providing a service for families and you do the best that you possibly can.”

Executive councillor for environment and operations, John Reilly welcomed this recognition. “Lance epitomises everything that is great about the public sector and its partners.

"To demonstrate such understanding and a determination to make sure, whatever the obstacles his efforts mean people mourning the loss of a loved one have a reassuring, dignified experience at our cemeteries shows true commitment.

"I would like to extend not only my personal thanks and appreciation to Lance, but that of Trafford Council and our local communities, for his outstanding contribution to local life.

"I am sure that his exceptionally high standard of work and care will continue for his new employers.”

Lance is now employed by Amey under the pioneering One Trafford contracts.

Joe Stafford, Amey's account director for Trafford said: "We are extremely pleased to hear of this award. This exceptional public service and commitment to his work is something we are delighted to be benefiting from as his new employers."

On receiving his award, Lance said: “I'm really pleased to have won the award and I feel good for everyone working at Trafford Council to be recognised with such a prestigious award."
