MEMBERS of Timperley-based charity fundraisers the Thirty Three are holding a series of events to mark their 70th year.

Formed in 1945 to assist former service personnel and their families, the group was first based in the now demolished Sylvan Inn, but has conducted its activities at Timperley Conservative & Social Club since 1970.

The group looks to support worthy causes in its immediate community.

“We try to fill the gap beneath larger, better-known organisations like the Round Table and the Lions,” said current chairman John Everton.

“Every penny we raise goes to local people and groups.

"We have a committee set up to ascertain genuine need and no funds are ever diverted to administrative costs.”

The Thirty Three’s annual social programme has been augmented by special events to mark the 70th anniversary, including a ‘Night with Elvis’ in August and a ‘Sixties Special’ starring The Kasuals next February.

The celebrations kicked off in May with a 'We’ll meet again' night starring veteran entertainer Martin Barry, when many of the audience either donned '40s fashions or were attired in red, white and blue.

Coming up on July 12 (noon) is the group’s summer fair. Attractions include a ‘Frozen’ Wonderland, Shopping Trolley & Very Boozy Trolley Draws, Raffles, BBQ, Games for Children and an Auction which will include an autographed Manchester United shirt, plus a signed pair of Michael Carrick’s new boots.

The highlight of the day could be the appearance of the Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band, who will march from the Heyes Lane club, along Crofton Avenue to the site of the former Sylvan Inn, then back along Woodhouse Lane East before the opening of the fair.

The group is asking Timperley residents to listen out and them a wave between 11.30am and 12 noon.
