TRAFFORD residents showed that nothing could dampen their spirits as they celebrated together at Lostock Park's official commemorative VE Day event last week.

Throughout the event, war themed music rang around the park from bands including 3rd Davyhulme Scout and Girl Band. There was also a moving solo vocal performance from 96 year-old war veteran and Flixton resident Tommy Norfolk.

The Friends of Lostock Park enthusiastically hosted the borough's official VE Day beacon, one of a chain across the country lit on the night.

Following the reading of a tribute to all those touched by WWII events, the band, together with Manchester and District Battalion Boys Brigade paraded to the beacon lighting site and witnessed the Mayor of Trafford, Ejaz Malik lighting the beacon, its flame glowing evocatively against the night sky.

Speaking after the event, the Mayor said: "It was an honour to perform the beacon lighting ceremony and witness so many people enjoying Trafford's official commemorative VE Day event. To be able to join together to celebrate and reflect in this way was extremely special and I was honoured to play a small part in making the event so memorable."
