Hale Barns District

Old Timbered Building The Square

Hale Barns takes its name from a tithe barn built in the 17th century, to which farmers would bring a tenth of their crops as an offering to God. The food was then given to the poor.

The old barn building, pictured, has since been demolished.

Now in the top 10% of the wealthiest areas in England, Hale Barns lies at the southern tip of Trafford borough, bounded to the east by the M56, to the south by the River Bollin, to the west by the residential areas of Altrincham and to the north by Newall Green.

Home to just over 9,000 people, there are five distinct neighbourhoods in the area at Davenport Green, Hale Barns Shopping Centre, The Mount, Well Green and Warburton Green.

*The ongoing debate and news on the proposed redevelopment of the shopping centre is covered in a separate section on this site.

AMENITIES

Hale Barns has 20.28 hectares of green space. It has two private golf courses, and there are also other private clubs providing tennis, bowling and football facilities.

Halecroft Park, which has Green Flag status, features a good mix of sports and play facilities (including a football pitch and tennis court), open spaces, ornamental and wildlife gardens. The park, which is located opposite St Ambrose College on the A56 Hale Road between Altrincham and Hale Barns, has a car park off Hale Road.

Before 1965, when the land came into the ownership of the local authority, Halecroft Park was partly open fields and partly the formal gardens of Halecroft House. Maps show that the house was built at some stage between 1882 and 1910. The ornamental gardens still contain features that date from the original garden, which it is believed was designed in the Arts and Crafts style used by famous architect Edgar Wood.

If you want to find out more about the park, you can contact the Friends of Halecroft Park, who have developed a management and development plan in partnership with Trafford council, by calling 0161 912 2000
