WELLACRE Academy celebrated a fantastic set of results with more students than ever leaving with strong passes in English and Maths.

Despite the widening gender gap in English results, Wellacre boys have again achieved significantly better than boys nationally in the new and more rigorous exams.

In maths, the students celebrated the best Wellacre results for 10 years which ensured plenty of smiles as they secured the grades they needed for their next steps in education, employment or apprenticeships.

Success was not only confined to English and maths but across the breadth of curriculum.

Half the boys in GCSE PE achieved an A*-B grade, two -thirds of design, engineer and construct students achieved an A* or A grade and boys in art, photography, performing arts, chemistry, physics and biology all achieved grades which were significantly better than the national results.

Principal Melanie Wicks said: "I am really proud of the boys’ achievements and congratulate them all on their significant success. I would like to thank the staff and our parents for all the support they have given the boys and wish them every success in the future."

There were some notable individual successes too this year. Ryan Ogden achieved the new grade 9 in both English and Maths while Oliver Howard, Alex Stephens and Shaun Doherty achieved one grade 9. The boys were understandably ‘delighted’ by their results and are looking forward to starting their A-level courses in September.

This comes on top of a 'good' rating from Ofsted in June. Miss Wicks said: “We are very pleased that Ofsted have agreed with our own assessments that Wellacre is indeed a good school. This result is a testament to all the efforts of staff and students, day in – day out, to further improve Wellacre.”

Highlights of the report include:

* Endorsements from Ofsted on parents views that the school is producing “well-rounded citizens that have the skills such as resilience, self-confidence and self-worth and empathy to prepare them for the next stage of their lives.”

• A resounding positive judgement on the behaviour of boys at the school and that boys “feel safe and are safe” at the school and that boys are free from bullying and that “The school is highly inclusive and welcoming.”

• The vast majority of parents who responded to Parent View, the Ofsted online questionnaire, would recommend the school.

• The vast majority of pupils have good attitudes to learning. They are attentive and contribute enthusiastically in lessons.

Wellacre is holding an open evening on September 20.
