Pupils at Manchester High School for Girls are celebrating glowing GCSE results.

For 2016, 80 per cent of all grades at the city’s oldest all-girls school were the sought-after A* to A, with 96 per cent of all marks secured in the A* to B range.

Overall, 67 girls chalked up eight or more A* and A grades, with eight pupils achieving a string of nine A*s, that were topped off with an A* with distinction (the ‘super A*), in Additional Mathematics. Half of the year group at Manchester High School for Girls opted to take the Additional Mathematics paper, of which over 80 per cent achieved an A* with distinction, A* or A.

Shazia Absar was one of the pupils who received a distinction, along with nine A*s in her other subjects.

She said: “All summer I’ve been hoping for good results but these are beyond anything I imagined. All the hard work has certainly been worth it and the teachers here have been so supportive and encouraging along the way. I can’t wait to become part of our School’s Sixth Form and will be studying Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Spanish with a view to one day pursuing a career in Medicine.”

Libby Ingleby secured an A* with distinction in Additional Mathematics and 9 A*s, one of which was Drama.

She said: “Being able to balance my love of Drama alongside subjects such as Mathematics and Science has, I think, been the secret to my success. This year I’ve taken a lead role in the school show, Little Shop of Horrors, and participated in a theatre workshop on our trip to New York. Having an outlet for my creativity helps me clear my mind for the more traditional, classroom based subjects.”

Claire Hewitt, Head Mistress at Manchester High School for Girls, said: “These results are a reflection of the talented, hardworking pupils and excellent teachers we have here at Manchester High. I am so proud of each and every one of them and it’s been wonderful sharing today with them.

“The Additional Maths paper undoubtedly required an extra layer of commitment from the girls but it has provided them with a solid foundation for further studies here in the Sixth Form at MHSG.

“A Manchester High girl is given the opportunity to shine across the full breadth of the curriculum; for example, she could be a confident linguist and a high-performing athlete, a skilled scientist and a talented artist, a spectacular performer who also happens to excel in computing.

“We encourage our girls to explore all their passions so that when it comes to making A-level choices they really can make an informed decision of the route they want to take.”

Manchester High welcomes external applications to join its Sixth Form. This is normally conditional upon students achieving a grade A at GCSE in the subjects they wish to study, good passes in English and Maths, and at least five GCSEs at A* or A grades.

The next Sixth Form open events are on Thursday September 29 and Wednesday October 5. Visit manchesterhigh.co.uk for more information.
