WITHINGTON Girls' School pupils are celebrating another outstanding set of GCSE results.

Pupils secured the elite A* grade in 72.2 per cent of GCSE papers taken this year, with an exceptional 95.5 per cent attaining grades A* to A.

The cohort of 83 Year 11 girls passed all GCSE and IGCSE papers taken. 65 girls earned six or more A* grades and 14 girls swept the board with straight A* grades in all their subjects.

In many subjects, A* was the average grade achieved, including Greek (where A* made up 100 per cent of entries), ICT (98 per cent), Chemistry (95 per cent), Physics (87 per cent), Biology (87 per cent), Further Mathematics (83 per cent), Geography (83 per cent), Mathematics (82 per cent), Double Science (77 per cent), Art (78 per cent), Drama (75 per cent) and Music (73 per cent).

In Further Mathematics, a half of the 52 entries were awarded the even higher accolade of an A* grade ‘with Distinction’.

Every Withington girl also achieved at least one GCSE in a modern foreign language, with the majority being awarded an A* or A grade: French (96 per cent), German (85 per cent), and Spanish (79 per cent). These exceptionally high standards were maintained in English Language and English Literature, where 98 per cent and 90 per cent of entries respectively were graded either A* or A.

Withington’s headmistress Sue Marks, who is retiring from her post this week after leading the school for the past six years, praised the girls for their hard work and motivation and also commended the WGS staff for their dedication.

“I am absolutely delighted for all our girls”, she said. “These results are wonderful achievements which will prepare them exceptionally well for study at Advanced level and then at university and in their future careers. The results reflect the girls’ own high ability and hard work, the splendid support of their families and their teachers’ own passion for their subjects, commitment to excellent teaching and individual support of the girls. I wish them – and my successor Sarah Haslam – every success and happiness for the future.”
