STUDENTS at Wellacre Academy in Flixton decided to celebrate World Book Day by supporting the National Literacy Trust, a charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged children by working to raise literacy levels in the UK.

The students worked with the school's librarian, Mandi Sissons, to organise a Big Book Sale.

Family and friends donated their unwanted books which were sold for 50p and £1 on World Book Day, March 3.

They held the sale in the main school reception area during break and lunch time, using posters, stickers and word of mouth to promote the event.

Thanks to their hard work the sale was a great success, raising £35 - and one student bought an impressive nine books

Tom Daly, leader of English, said: “We are immensely proud of the efforts of our students, both during World Book Day and indeed throughout the year.

"The success of the Accelerated Reader programme and the continued popularity of the school's well stocked library highlight the efforts of both teacher and students in ensuring that our students are well prepared for the demands of the modern world.

"The recent Good Schools Guide Award is the culmination of these efforts.”
