AN aspiring doctor from Sale, 17-year-old Ebubechi Okpalugo, has been offered a place to study medicine at the University of Oxford.

Ebubechi, who is currently studying A Level biology, chemistry and art at Manchester High School for Girls, is on her way to studying at one of the best universities in the world and fulfilling a lifelong dream of working directly with people as a doctor.

She is still coming to terms with her offer and said: “I still can’t quite believe it. I’ve always thought that idea of studying at Oxford is somewhat unattainable. My teachers were really supportive and encouraged me to apply and I am so glad I did.”

Talented Ebubechi needs an A* and two As to get on her course, but having achieved straight A*s at all her 10.5 GCSEs, she is feeling confident about her exams this spring. She has already got an insight into the world of medicine by completing work experience in the lung transplant centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, as well as shadowing an anaesthetist at Trafford General Hospital.

Ebubechi added: “I really enjoyed my time at the hospitals but I am not quite sure what specialism I will end up following. I am interested in paediatrics and emergency medicine but that may still change. I would definitely like to travel as a doctor too, so I am keeping my options open for now.”

She has enjoyed her time at Manchester High to the full; she is part of the head girl team and she has represented her school in netball and athletics competitions since she was 11. Ebubechi said: “I’ve loved pretty much everything I have ever got involved in at school, especially all the sports and art. It’s been special to me to represent my fellow students as one of the head girls and being in the student council.

"For anyone out there thinking about applying for a course at Oxbridge, never think you’re not good enough. If you don’t try, how do you know what might happen? Just be yourself, know your subject and just go for it!”
