A FLIXTON school is throwing the doors open to a new era.

Acre Hall Primary School moved into its brand new school building last week.

The state-of-the-art building, which took 18 months to erect, replaces the aluminium, prefabricated building constructed in 1952.

The original school was built by The Bristol Aircraft Company as it diversified into other projects after the end of World War Two. The school was only intended to last for 15 years before being rebuilt with more standard construction methods – but remained in use for a further 48 years.

Work will begin soon to demolish the old school and make way for a new play area for pupils.

Ashlea White, head of school at Acre Hall, said: “We are delighted that we can provide our pupils with a fantastic place to learn. This community deserves to have a new primary school that it can be proud of and somewhere for its young people to excel.”

In 2013, Acre Hall became a sponsored academy under The Dunham Trust and its trustees and executive principal Jo Appleyard worked tirelessly to secure funds from the Department for Education to rebuild the school.

The new school is equipped with the latest technology and also benefits from a ‘Breathing Building’ system, with automatic underfloor heating and sensor controlled ceiling fans.

The school plans to have an open day in the summer to showcase the new facilities.
