FLIXTON Girls’ School has been selected to lead the way in the fields of health and wellbeing for other schools throughout the UK.

The Youth Sport Trust, a charity dedicated to changing young people’s lives through sport, has awarded the school innovation school status, meaning the teachers and students will act as ambassadors and guides on the subject of health and wellbeing.

The Trust has always promoted collaboration to raise standards of fitness within and between schools. It has appointed seven Innovation Schools to promote the impact of PE and school sport across education, sharing best practice and expertise.

FGS was selected as one of the Innovation Schools following its launch of Fitness Fridays last year, as well as its ongoing work with other schools in the north west and acting as sporting ambassadors throughout the country.

Each Innvoation School has a different field to promote.

Kay Statham, school games organiser at FGS said: “We are passionate about sport and fitness at FGS. PE contributes to health and teamwork and contributes massively to all other subjects through its empowering and affirming results.

“Being appointed by Youth Sport Trust is a huge honour and we’re delighted to be involved. We hope that this project will demonstrate that our innovative physical activity solutions can enable every girl to achieve. This also echoes the Sport England campaign, ‘This Girl Can’. We have worked hard at FGS to utilise our sports specialism to impact positively on all of our pupils in some way, either mentally or physically.”

The appointment will see FGS work with the other six schools to create easily implementable programmes for other teaching staff. It will also see the staff and pupils work with a university research team to demonstrate the impact of health and wellbeing on young people.

Kay added: “We cannot wait to get started. This is something the whole school is passionate about.”
