DAVYHULME

About:
Davyhulme is a locality within the borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester and was historically once a part of Lancashire.
The development of the Trafford Centre, and the ongoing redevelopment of Urmston town centre mean that Davyhulme now appears to be emerging as one of the more affluent neighbourhoods west of the city of Manchester.
Davyhulme is within walking distance of the Trafford Centre and is eight miles outside of Manchester city centre, just off junction 10 of the M60 ring road. Davyhulme is also ideally placed to hop on the M62 to Liverpool and Leeds.
There are many business opportunities to be found in Davyhulme as a result of the close proximity of Trafford Park and Trafford General Hospital.
Plenty of good primary schools make Davyhulme an ideal location for young families and this means that the area is classed as prestigious by some estate agents.

Political:
Politically this area is divided into Davyhulme East and Davyhulme West electoral wards although a proportion of Urmston is included in Davyhulme East and some of the neighbouring area of Flixton is counted as being part of Davyhulme West. The wards make up two of the five wards of Urmston and the sitting councillors are all Conservatives.
Davyhulme is in the parliamentary constituency of Stretford and Urmston but until the general election in 1997 it gave its name to the Davyhulme constituency. Labour MP Beverley Hughes currently represents the Stretford and Urmston constituency and this has been the case since 1997.
Winston Spencer-Churchill, the retired Conservative Party politician and grandson of the former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill was the MP for the Manchester constituency of Stretford from 1970 until the general election in 1983 when he was transferred to the new Davyhulme constituency, which he represented until the seat was abolished in the 1997 general election.

Davyhulme East is in the north of Trafford and is bound to the north by the Manchester Ship Canal. This part of Davyhulme is home to the Trafford Centre and is separated from the residential areas of the ward by the M60.
It is also home to Davyhulme waste water treatment works, which is the largest of its kind in the north west and one of the biggest in Europe and Trafford General Hospital (formerly park Hospital) where rock idol Stephen Morrissey of the Smiths was born in 1959.
Within this ward there is also the historical Barton Aquaduct, which crosses Manchester Ship Canal.

History:
Though Davyhulme records only date back to the 14th century, it is known that the old Davyhulme Hall was the seat of John Hulme in the 12th century. It is supposed that the prefix ‘Davy’, whatever its origins, was to distinguish it from the other Hulme in Manchester.
The deHulme family built Davyhulme Hall in between 1150 and 1160. Davyhulme Park Golf Club now occupies the area. Part of the land belonging to the former hall was given away so that St Mary’s Church could be built in 1889. The hall was demolished in 1888.
Davyhulme is a civil parish formed in 1894 from the area of Barton-upon-Irwell. In 1892 small areas of land in the Davyhulme area were exchanged between Barton-upon-Irwell and Pendleton township and in 1896 part of it was added to Barton Moss Civil Parish. In 1933 Davyhulme Civil Parish was dissolved and its area was divided between Urmston and Stretford Urban District, which is now a part of Trafford Metropolitan Borough.
