THE new term got off to a superb start for staff at a Trafford school after they bagged a National Lottery win.

A syndicate of 20 staff from Moorlands Junior School in Sale, returned after the summer break to discover they had scooped a stunning £73,273 prize.

Syndicate leader, Alison Kelly, had decided to save the good news until the staff meeting on the first morning back at school.

Alison, from Urmston, said: “I thought it would be a really lovely surprise for the staff when they returned to school.

“We put the lottery on at the start of the summer holidays for six weeks. I hadn’t checked the tickets until the final week back before school started and I discovered we had won a couple of £10s, £45 and then the big win of £73,273.

“I initially told the staff about the smaller wins. Then I went on to the big win and said we have also won £3,663 …. Each! No one could believe it. The room just went completely quiet – everyone thought I was joking.”

The syndicate, Moorlands Syndicate, which includes teachers, classroom assistants, secretaries and caretakers, has been playing the National Lottery for two years.

It was a Lucky Dip ticket which won them the big prize, after they matched five numbers: 1,5,18,34 and 44 and the bonus ball: 23.

Members of the syndicate have a variety of plans on how they will spend their winnings, ranging from holidays and new cars, to a new kitchen.

Alison bought the winning ticket from Momen News in Crofts Bank Road, Urmston.
