Coronation Street set painting goes on the market

TO mark a new era for Coronation Street - which moves to a new home in Trafford next year - an iconic painting depicting the original set has been put up for sale by a Hale art gallery.

‘Coronation Street Set’, one of Manchester artist William Turner’s most famous paintings, depicts the Rovers Return at the heart of the fictional street.

It has been placed on sale by Clark Art Gallery in Hale, Cheshire at £48,500.

The British soap opera was first transmitted on ITV on December 9 1960 by Granada Television. A few months later, William Turner speculatively produced his 20" x 24" oil painting of the Coronation Street set.

Bill Clark, owner of Clark Art Gallery in Hale, said: “We held a phenomenally successful Turner exhibition in 2010, with works selling for £50,000. His paintings are a great investment and have increased in value dramatically in the past five years."

Coronation Street is due to relocate taking the old set, cobble by cobble, from central Manchester to a new 7.7-acre studio and production facility in Trafford.

An application to give listed status to the Coronation Street set, which would help secure its future when it is vacated next year, has been refused by English Heritage.
