THE 5,000-strong Save Flixton Green Belt group will be holding a community fundraising event called The William Wroe Roam next week.

The event, which will take place at the Flixton Road side of the William Wore Golf Course, on Saturday April 8 from 1 to 4pm, is a family fun day.

The golf course is to be closed by Trafford Council on Friday March 31.

Fun family events include: Birdie Bingo, Hole in One, Easter Egg Hunt, face painting, Beat The Golfer, Girl Guide craft stall, bouncy castle, ice cream van and burger van.

Key note speakers include Kate Green, MP for Urmston and Stretford, and Andy Western Leader of Trafford Labour Party.

Both have attended and delivered speeches at the two previous public events arranged by the Save Flixton Green Belt Facebook Group.

The group is fighting to prevent 750 houses being erected on part of the William Wroe golf course and the removal of green belt status from Flixton playing field, park and Flixton House.

The campaign group packed out The John Alker Club one week before Christmas and more than one thousand people turned out to demonstrate in January.

A Save Flixton Green Belt spokesperson said: “We invite all the local community, young and old, golfers or not to come and enjoy the day on your beautiful green open space.”

A fundraising single by Manchester band The Pilchard Heads, “Don’t Wanna Live In A Concrete Jungle” will be available from the Save Flixton Green Belt’s Facebook page on the day of the launch.

Money raised will be used to help with the campaign.

Visitors to Saturday’s event are asked to enter the grounds on Pennybridge Lane, next to the Bird I’th Hand Pub.
