THIS year marks 100 years since industrialist Sir John Leigh donated the land to create a new park for Altrincham – and the park’s ‘friends’ need your help piecing together its past.

The Friends of John Leigh Park are researching the park’s history and planning events and activities, including a special Big Lunch event on in June, to celebrate its centenary.

So far they have uncovered information about the early tenants of Oldfield Hall, that once stood on the site, the original plans John Leigh had for the park, and the Peace Day celebrations that were held there in 1917 to mark the end of World War One.

But the group needs help to find out more, particularly of its recent history.

Dave Jolley, from the Friends of John Leigh Park, said: “The donation of the land was only the beginning, we want to know what the park has meant to local people over these 100 years. The park has changed a lot, there used to be a pitch and putt, a park keeper’s hut, bandstand and paddling pool.

"We want to hear peoples’ stories about how they used the park and gather photos and newspaper cuttings as well.”
