KIND-hearted kids have organised a collection of Christmas treats for their disadvantaged peers in Manchester.

Pupils from Flixton Junior School, in Delamere Road, collected more than 300 advent calendars during their recent ‘Own Clothes Day’.

The advent calendars will be distributed to Wood Street Mission, which is based in Manchester city centre.

The charity helps families affected by poverty in the Manchester and Salford area, through practical help and a range of services.

Every Christmas, the charity gives out toys and food to struggling families to ease the financial burden at an expensive time of year and help ensure all children will have a present to open on Christmas Day.

This year, Wood Street Mission will be giving out goods through its community shop and two Christmas fairs in Manchester and Salford, which will allow parents to choose presents to give to their children.

Flixton Junior School ran a collection last year for Wood Street Mission and headteacher Jason Redmond said the pupils were keen to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Mr Redmond said: “Wood Street Mission is a charity that we wholeheartedly support, both in the Junior and Infant Schools, and we are pleased that the children have once again been able to make their donations.

“This is especially poignant at Christmas time. We often take for granted something as simple as an advent calendar but we know it means a lot to those children who aren’t as fortunate as ours.”
