POLICE have launched a murder investigation after finding a man's body in an Urmston flat and a woman nearby with head injuries.

Police were called to Atkinson Road at around 12.30pm on Monday, after receiving calls from members of the public about a woman with a head injury.

Officers attended and found the body of a man at an address on the street.

A man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.

The woman, who had suffered a head injury which prompted the initial call, has been taken to hospital for treatment.

Earlier, staff at Higher Road Auto Services on nearby Higher Road came to her aid.

An employee at the garage said: "A woman was on Atkinson Road screaming.

"She had an injury to her head, she had blood coming from it.

We called her over and sat her down and called an ambulance."

A man tried to get in the garage to the woman, but the garage's dog, a Japanese Akita, protected her.

"Our dog scared him off.," the employee said.

Detective Inspector Carl Gilbert, of GMP’s Trafford borough, said: “We are in the very early stages of our enquiries but I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family of this man.

“Local residents may notice an increase in police presence as we conduct our enquiries and should they have any concerns about this incident then I would say feel free to approach these officers and raise them.”
