In my block of sheltered flats many of my friends and neighbours depend on carers. These carers are often loyal, kind, and committed to doing the best for the people they visit.

As our car park is tiny the carers usually park next door, in the library car park.

If the proposals go ahead to build new luxury flats in the car park, and to replace the library with a larger building, these carers will often find the library car park full.

They will have to park further away from the infirm and very elderly, who often need their care and support to get out of bed, to dress, and to eat.

Their visits will therefore have to be rushed, with less time for the chat and social contact that can make life worth living for those who have lived through war and served our country when they were younger and fitter.

Those of us who can still get around will see our library facilities degraded.

That library is a lifeline for many of us, and for the many other elderly residents in and around the village.

We don't need a new library. We don't need 24 luxury flats. We do need this central car park, with enough space for carers to park beside the old people who need them.

Why can't the Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors understand something so simple? Or is it that they do understand, but don't care?
