THE Friends of Bowdon Bollin are drawing up plans to upgrade a muddy public footpath.

The path becomes a quagmire at points during the winter months. It is part of a three-mile circular country walk from Bowdon Vale and is one of the paths linking Bowdon to the Bollin Valley Way.

It leads from where Priory Road runs into Bow Lane, down to a footbridge across the River Bollin.

Friends of the Bowdon Bollin are planning to apply for funding to level and surface the footpath in the run up to the bridge and replace the rotting stiles with more accessible gates where it crosses the fields.

They also want to remove the mud from the top section that runs past Priory Farm so that the local community can use the footpath all year round.

Dr Angela Hilton, chairman of Ramblers Trafford, said: “A project such as this will improve access and use of a public footpath on the edge of a built up area. Walking benefits both mental and physical health and recent research has shown that a regular brisk walk for at least 20 minutes a day leads to increased life expectancy.

"It’s vitally important to have year round access to great footpaths.”

A public meeting will be held on January 29 at the Bowdon Vale Methodist Church on Priory Street, starting at 7.30 pm to discuss the plans,
