A NEW 40,000 sqft Asda store may soon be built in Broadheath.

Plans have yet to be submitted to Trafford Council, but Property Alliance Group, which is handling the currently unofficial proposal, has drafted plans for a food store with accompanying petrol station at George Richards Way, Broadheath, near Altrincham Retail Park.

The Trafford Park based company held a public exhibition of the plans on Friday, December 14.

At the time of writing, neither Property Alliance Group or Asda have confirmed whether further consultation will be held.

A spokesman for Asda said: “We’ve been bowled over by the response from the local community to our plans – with many local shoppers expressing their support for a new Asda store in Broadheath.

"We’re committed to working with the local community and will be submitting our application with our development partners in the New Year.”

Timperley councillor, Jane Brophy, said: “I am not sure if people there would like a new supermarket, or if they are happy with the existing Waitrose.

“I think with any supermarket development it is always up to the local people whether they would like it or not.

“I would like to be certain it did not compromise wildlife in the area.”

The Altrincham Town Centre Partnership has also expressed concern, tweeting: “Asda Broadheath needs some very careful consideration for #Altrincham Proposal takes 25 per cent of food shop out of the town.”

However, thus far the public reaction has been positive in general.

@Daz33 said on Twitter: “Messenger saying Asda are looking at building an Asda food store in Broadheath which would include a petrol station a very good idea.”

Tom Ellis agreed, tweeting: “Great to hear about proposals for a new #Asda food store in #Broadheath #Altrincham. Will be v handy for locals without cars, like me!”

However, Lee Flitcroft is in two minds: “Yes and No! Will have direct impact on town centre but will improve trade at the retail park which is needed to rival new proposed Peel one!”
