A TRAFFORD Park-based business, Northern Drives and Controls Ltd (NDC), has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the UK’s most prestigious business award.

NDC is the leading international company in the repair and refurbishment of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) and converters from hundreds of manufacturers.

The VFDs it repairs and refurbish are used in many applications from cranes and elevators, to robotics, compressors and renewable energy.

Its Queen’s Award is in recognition of its growth and commercial success in international trade.

The managing director, David Griffin, said: “We are delighted to have received this prestigious award in recognition of our international growth. The focus of our international strategy has been on building up a network of strategic partners around the world to act as distributors of our service.

“We provide our international network with dedicated support, alongside an in-depth training programme. This has helped to ensure that we have maintained our reputation for excellent customer service and our record for first time repair success during a period of rapid international growth.”

With two main UK operational centres, based on Trafford Park in Manchester and Slough Trading Estate in Berkshire, NDC covers the South, the Midlands and the North of the UK. It supports its international network of distributors via its Manchester Head Office.

With a total of 40 employees across the two sites, NDC depends upon the specialist skills of its people, many of whom have degrees in electronics. The diverse and highly skilled workforce is key to the success of their international strategy - a workforce which includes 12 nationalities and nine principle languages spoken across their organisation.

Having expanded rapidly in Europe and penetrated markets in the Middle East, Australia and America, NDC’s target is to further develop in Australia and America and expand into the Far East and China.
