THE GREEK Kitchen, a new Greek-Cypriot restaurant on Washway Road, Sale, was so busy on Mother’s Day they had to turn away 10 members of the Coronation Street cast.

It is run by Cos Michael, Costas Shengas, his father-in-law and Stelios Shengas, his brother-in-law. Costas ran Costas Fish and Chip Shop on Hale Road for 28 years.

Many diners are former customers of Pacinos, the Italian restaurant which preceded them. The two restaurants are linked by the same waiter – Michael Suwinski.

Cos said: “I had seen him in action so I knew he was good at what he did. A lot of the Pacino’s customers recognise him.”

Despite this, 80 per cent of diners are new and enjoying authentic Greek Cypriot food cooked by master chef Markos Iraklis.

“Everything is cooked from fresh and is sourced locally. One of the perks of the job has been tasting wines supplied by award winning vineyards from Greece, Cyprus and world wide,” said Cos.

The owners have spent a lot of money on upgrading the building. They have modernised the kitchen, and re-roofed, re-wired it and decorated it.

Cos, who is of Greek-Cypriot origin himself, says he hopes eventually to serve lunch and have a take-away service. He also has plans for al-fresco dining in the summer.
